Lost City Walking Track, Lithgow

A short return walk in the Gardens of Stone, just outside Lithgow. It’s close to town, easy to reach, clearly marked, and doesn’t require much planning beyond comfortable shoes and a drink bottle. You’ll see sandstone formations, pockets of bushland and a simple creek crossing, with a steady climb back up at the end. A solid option for an afternoon outdoors without needing a full‑day hike.

Hidden gems walked by women

Some walks only come your way because someone mentions them – a friend, a neighbour, someone who’s already been. The Lost City is one of those places, and here’s how one woman found it, walked it, and rated it...

The Lost City Walking Track in the Gardens of Stone sounds like something from an Indiana Jones movie but it's actually just a short drive from Lithgow – and is perfect for a few hours of fun. The start of the track is not far from the carpark and looks out over spectacular rock formations.

My friend Cathy and I set off down the steps that lead to the valley floor. Here, the ferns, overhanging rocks dripping with moisture, bird call and the running water of Marangaroo Creek create a beautiful atmosphere.

Sandstone blocks have been laid in the creek for stepping stones and the track is really well defined, thanks to the incredible work of National Parks. We climbed up to the Lost City north lookout and enjoyed more stunning views before heading back the way we came. This isn't a loop track.

We found the climb up the stairs at the end of the walk quite challenging and I had to stop several times to catch my breath. We felt very pleased with ourselves when we reached the top.

Cathy and I enjoyed every minute of this walk. We saw birds, amazing scenery, and met friendly fellow walkers. It was a great way to spend an afternoon and we'd definitely go back.
