Starting a community
For Robyn Wray, putting yourself first and showing up for others go hand in hand. As the founder of Lavish Nutrition, she serves healthy protein smoothies and energy-loaded teas to Bathurst locals. But the heart of her work goes well beyond the counter. It's about community, connection and being the friend her customers need.
What gap did you see in Bathurst, and how did Lavish Nutrition come about?
I have been very interested in health and nutrition for over 10 years, and in putting yourself first. As a mum, I believe it is imperative to look after yourself first – and that starts from within, with your health and nutrition.
In 2021, during Covid lockdown, I got a bit bored, and I recognised that Bathurst was missing out on healthy fast food nutrition options.
That’s when Lavish Nutrition was born, and on 30 October 2021, we opened the doors to provide healthy protein smoothies and energy-loaded teas.
“When you open a business in a regional area, you aren’t just opening a door, you’re starting a community.”
What role has the Bathurst community played in Lavish Nutrition's journey?
When you open a business in a regional area, you aren't just opening a door, you’re starting a community.
One thing we have going for us in the regional areas is that we look out for each other. We care. We want each other to achieve. Because together we are stronger.
Being able to create such a community through Lavish Nutrition has been an honour.
Other small business owners have influenced and supported me the most. Being able to chat to and connect with other like-minded people while building our dream has been imperative for our growth.
But I’ve also had the opportunity to be inspired by so many locals who aren't even business owners in Bathurst.

What does success look like for you, and what's involved in getting there?
Success for me is to have a thriving business and a wonderful community around our studio.
A typical week involves serving locals their energy and protein, while balancing social media content, family life and checking in on people, all at the same time as ordering and making sure we have everything we need for the shop.
“The success of your business won’t be because of your business, it will be because of you.”
What do you wish someone had told you when you started?
That owning a business is hard work, but it is worth it.
When you open a business, it isn't for the light-hearted. Everything starts and finishes with you.
I remember a friend saying to me before I opened: the success of your business won't be because of your business, it will be because of you.
These are words I think of every day. It is so imperative to show up and be that friend your customers need.
