Slow-lunch October: 6 Central West spots to pull up a chair this weekend
Spring's finally doing its job, which means lunch has officially moved outside. Courtyards, beer gardens, riverbanks, village pubs, these six are where we're spending our weekends right now, long lunches, slow afternoons, and absolutely no rush to be anywhere else.
Grab your friends, grab a table in the sun, and work your way through the list (outside seating, obviously).
Bathurst River Cafe, Bathurst
The vibe: Garden tables, timber chairs, and a soundtrack of easy music floating across the water, the kind of setup that makes a quick coffee stop turn into an hour.
Our lunch pick: The loaded avocado smash, piled high and worth every bit of the mess, or one of Maggie's homemade cakes if you're staying a while.
Why we love it: The easiest reset after a river walk, away from the bustle of downtown Bathurst without actually going anywhere.
Rustic Nature, Neville
The vibe: Quirky, calming, a bit scattered in the best way. You'll find lounges and tables dotted around the yard, silky chickens wandering free, and nobody in any rush to move you along.
Our lunch pick: The bacon quiche or the egg and bacon roll, followed by whatever slice is fresh that day, the sour cream apple and caramel slice both come highly recommended.
Why we love it: Run by Sarah and Aaron, who've built something community-minded in a town of under 100 people. You come for the coffee, stay for the animals, and leave with a plant you didn't know you needed.
O'Connell Hotel, O’Connell
The vibe: A genuine historic village pub, freshly restored, where the publican knows your name by round two.
Our lunch pick: A classic pub meal and a cold tap beer or a crisp white wine, no notes needed.
Why we love it: It's the heart of the town, and you feel it the second you walk in. Bonus points if you swing by Flat Rock on the Fish River on the way home.
Crossroads Cafe, Sofala
The vibe: A casual, cosy cafe with a bit of outdoor seating, right across the road from the Royal Hotel. Friendly team, fast service, and the kind of place that makes a two-street town worth the stop.
Our lunch pick: The all-day breakfast, with the specials board worth a look too, it changes weekly.
Why we love it: Pull in for a quick coffee and somehow you're there an hour later, having wandered half the town before you've noticed the time.
El Guapo Cantina, Bathurst
The vibe: Bathurst-born and family-owned, with music drifting through the courtyard and a mix of indoor and sun-soaked outdoor seating. Casual, inviting, and exactly where you want to be for a long lunch.
Our lunch pick: Start with the elote and quesadilla, then the pollo and quesabirria to share (just point, let the team do the pronouncing). Keep an eye out for the monthly margarita special, we're capping ourselves at three!
Why we love it: Sitting down here feels like being invited into the owners' own backyard. They're magical, and so is the food.

Norma Joan, Bathurst
The vibe: A hidden gem with a cosy inside and a courtyard built for the sun. A wine bar at heart, share plates made for passing around the table, a solid local wine, beer and cocktail list, and Sunday sessions that mean live music and absolutely nowhere to be.
Our lunch pick: We can't go past the Norma Joan Burger, but their pasta dishes aren’t far behind. Let Michael drive the drinks selection, trust the pour.
Why we love it: Outdoor seating, sunshine, good music, nobody rushing you anywhere.
