Lake Canobolas, Orange
Lake Canobolas sits just west of Orange at the base of Mount Canobolas. The landscape shifts completely with the seasons – you'll get winter mist settling low over the water or bright reflections in summer.
The loop walk is an easy 2.4 kilometres. It is flat and completely fuss-free, tracking along gravel paths, boardwalks over the reeds, and a historic dam wall you can wander across. It’s the exact kind of place you visit when you don't want to plan a thing. Grab a slow lap around the water, sit at a picnic table if you want to linger, and let the space clear your head.

A winter lap
A few weeks ago, I ducked over from Bathurst for a change of scenery – an easy hour’s drive past Orange and straight into crisp winter air. The lake was wrapped in heavy mist when I arrived, sitting low over the water and giving the whole place a quiet, almost cinematic edge.
I brought Bil – it’s a good spot for dogs as long as they stay on lead – and we wandered the 2.4‑kilometre loop. It’s completely flat, a mix of gravel and pavement, more of a gentle wander than a hike, which was exactly the pace I wanted.
The track takes you across the old concrete dam wall, where you can look straight down at the spillway, then out onto a wooden boardwalk that skims the edge of the lake. Bil was busy sniffing through the reeds, and we spotted black swans and ducks drifting through the shallows.
When the fog finally shifted, the sun broke through just long enough to throw a rainbow across Mount Canobolas and the water – one of those blink‑and‑you‑miss‑it winter moments that makes the cold worth it.
The whole area’s well looked after, with plenty of parking and clean facilities, so you don’t have to think too hard about logistics. By the time we finished the loop my face was frozen, but Orange has no shortage of cosy spots to warm up afterwards. It’s the kind of easy day trip that clears your head without needing a full plan.
